Potassium Formate for Carbon Black
Potassium formate (for carbon black)

In the production of carbon black, especially in specialty carbon black and high-quality carbon black, structural inhibitors play a crucial role. Before the 1990s, sodium hydroxide was commonly used as a structural inhibitor; With the development of specialty carbon black, it is gradually being replaced by potassium carbonate; However, due to the low solubility of potassium carbonate, it is prone to stratification after dissolution (uneven concentration in the solution tank), which leads to clogging of the nozzle and unstable quality of carbon black, sometimes good and sometimes bad. Since 2004, we have collaborated with a multinational carbon black company in the United States to experimentally produce potassium formate instead of potassium carbonate in carbon black production, with excellent results. Through nearly a decade of promotion, potassium formate has become the mainstream structural inhibitor in carbon black production.
At the same time, ash content is also a very important indicator in carbon black production. Therefore, in order to ensure that the ash content in carbon black meets the standard, certain requirements have also been put forward for toxic and harmful substances in potassium formate. At present, the quality standards accepted by the vast majority of carbon black manufacturers are as follows:

Specifically, in the production process of carbon black, potassium formate mainly plays the following roles:
1. Decompose under high temperature conditions to produce oxygen, promoting the combustion reaction of hydrocarbon compounds.
2. As a catalyst, accelerate the pyrolysis reaction of hydrocarbon compounds and increase the generation rate of carbon black.
3. Improve the distribution of pyrolysis products and the properties of carbon black through interactions with reactants.
In summary, potassium formate plays an important role in the production of carbon black. It not only improves the yield and quality of carbon black, but also has environmentally friendly characteristics, which meets the sustainable development requirements of modern industrial production. Therefore, it is necessary to widely use potassium formate as a combustion aid and catalyst in the production of carbon black.
